Manila: Ferdinand Marcos Jr., son of late leader Ferdinand Marcos in the Philippines, has won the presidential election by defeating his main rival, incumbent Vice President Maria Leonor Robredo. He has unofficially secured 83.1 per cent votes in the preliminary results. Marcos’s family was once in power in the Philippines. But the Marcos family fled to Hawaii following allegations of corruption.

The latest figures said Marcos Jr. secured 26,681,414 votes compared to Robredo’s 12,736,644 votes in Monday’s election, Xinhua news agency reported. In a video message, Marcos Jr., popularly known as Bongbong, said, “Thank you all who have been with us over this long, sometimes very difficult journey over the past months.”

“I want to thank you for what you have done for us,” he said. “Counting of votes is not over yet. Wait for the complete counting of votes to be over. We need to be cautious.”
