Lahore: A former top official of Pakistan’s top investigative agency which had probed corruption cases against Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and his family members, including several top politicians, died of a heart attack. Former Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) director Mohammad Rizwan (47) had gone on a long leave just days before the PMLN-led coalition government was formed, ‘The Dawn’ newspaper reported.

He was later transferred from the office of the FIA Lahore director last month. He has been replaced by Additional Director Abu Bakr Khuda Bakhsh as the head of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up to probe the sugar scam. According to a source in Rizwan’s family, he suffered a heart attack in the early hours of Monday and was taken to a hospital where he was declared brought dead. Rizwan will be handed over here on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan government has sacked Omar Sarfaraz Cheema, the governor of Punjab province. However, President Arif Alvi did not consent to this. According to a notification issued by the Cabinet Division, Cheema has been removed in the light of advice given by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, reports Sama TV. Punjab Assembly Speaker Pervez Elahi will act as the caretaker governor until the new governor is sworn in. After being sacked, Cheema said that he is consulting his lawyers and will announce the future course of action soon.

According to the news of Sama TV, after the notification was issued, the Punjab government also removed the security of Cheema. Heavy police force has been deployed around the Governor’s House and barricades have been put up at all entry points. The police have been ordered not to allow Cheema to enter the building. Earlier on Monday, President Alvi had rejected Sharif’s advice to remove Cheema. Rejecting the advice, the President argued that there was no allegation of mismanagement against the Governor of Punjab and that he had not been convicted by any court.
