Colombo: The Modi government at the Center has rejected BJP MP Subramanian Swamy’s demand to send Indian Army to stop the ongoing violent protests in Sri Lanka. The High Commission of India in Sri Lanka has made it clear that it is not going to send any army. The Indian High Commission said that such views and reports are not in accordance with the official position of the Government of India. There was a sharp reaction in Sri Lanka to the statement of Rajapakse supporter Subramanian Swamy.

The Indian High Commission in a tweet said, “The High Commission of India rejects the completely speculative reports in a section of the media and social about the sending of the Indian Army to Sri Lanka. These reports and such views do not match the official position of the Government of India. The Spokesperson of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs had clearly stated yesterday that India fully supports democracy, restoration of economic conditions and stability in Sri Lanka.

Earlier, BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy had demanded from the Modi government at the Center that the Indian Army should be sent to improve the situation in Sri Lanka. On the other hand, the Indian Embassy has also dismissed the rumors that it was being said that Rajapaksa and his family have fled to India. India had termed these reports as completely fake. Meanwhile, Swamy is firm on his stand and is adamant on the demand to send the army.

Swamy said, the burning of the house of even the prime minister, the mob firing at the dead MP means that the rioters do not deserve any mercy. We (India) cannot allow another Libya to be formed in our neighbourhood.’ Let us inform that in view of the increasing violence in Sri Lanka (which includes setting fire to the homes of the leaders of the ruling party and the family members of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa), the armed forces have caused personal harm or damage to the property of others. Any person who robbed has been ordered to shoot.

Eight people, including a ruling party politician, a police officer and civilians, have been killed since Monday’s violence, while 219 injured are being treated in government hospitals. Secretary in the Defense Ministry Kamal Gunaratne said 60 vehicles, including buses and jeeps, have been set ablaze and over 40 vehicles damaged since Monday. The Defense Secretary said, “While peaceful protests are being held, there are some sections of the society who have resorted to violence and looting. We are going to strictly implement the law against those who violate it.
